Care For Life - Suicide Prevention

Youth Info Card and Youth Activity Poster

The 'Youth Info Card' was first produced by 'Care For Life' for young people in 1998.

This resource was launched by the State Minister for Health and the Mayor of the Gold Coast.

This project was supported by the Queensland Government Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy.

The card has since undergone four updates and over 1 million have been produced and distributed to young people throughout the Gold Coast. Late in 1999 the project was expanded to include a website and posters.

During 2001 the project was evaluated by Griffith University with funding provided by the Health Promotion Unit, Queensland Health. The project is based on the evidence that 30% of young men do not seek help when an issue or crisis arises. By providing easy access to useful contacts we hope that the card will encourage them to make a call when the need arises.

The card is distributed annually to all high schools and community organisations on the Gold Coast.

The 'Youth Activities Card' was also produced as a collaborative project in 2000 with the Gold Coast Youth Network. This project is based on the evidence that mental health problems, particularly depression are major contributing factors to suicidal behavioural and that protective factors strongly relate to social and community connectedness and leisure activities.

This project was also evaluated by Griffith University.

Both of these projects involve substantial input from the youth of the Gold Coast.

A number of promotional initiatives have been explored including collaboration with locally based McDonald's Restaurants.

In 2007, the Youth Activity Card was redesigned as a Youth Activities Poster.  Both the Youth Info Card and the newlook Youth Activity Poster were updated in 2007 and distributed to all high schools on the Gold Coast in anticipation of the 2008 school year.
