Why Is It Needed

Why Care For Life?

We believe a large number of suicides can be prevented.

Why we need suicide prevention strategies

We find it unacceptable that families and friends lose loved ones by suicide.

Each year in Queensland, over 500 people die from suicide NB. Nationally the figures vary from between 2000- 2500 (Reducing Suicide - the QLD Government Suicide Prevention Strategy, 2003-2008).

For each suicide death there are many more people who have attempted suicide (Reducing Suicide - the QLD Government Suicide Prevention Strategy, 2003-2008).

Despite a recent decrease in the incidence of youth suicide in Queensland, young people in Queensland have the highest rate of suicide in Australia (ABS 2001).

Males from 15-44 years of age have a significantly higher suicide rate than the overall male rate (De Leo & Evans, 2002).

In Queensland men are four times more likely to suicide than women (Reducing Suicide - the QLD Government Suicide Prevention Strategy, 2003-2008).

The older age group 75+ males are reported as having unstable but particularly high suicide rates (Reducing Suicide - the QLD Government Suicide Prevention Strategy, 2003-2008).
